The question about privacy and safety is the hottest topic on all social media networks including Facebook and Instagram. Before making your choice, you need to understand the benefits and the downside of certain levels of privacy and find the perfect balance that fits your goals.

You have two options of Instagram. The first one shares your posts publicly which means that any person can view what you posted without limits. They can access all your posts directly from their PC or mobile device at any time. There are several pros and cons to using private accounts on Instagram and we are now going to go through the most important ones.

First of, the pros:

Pro: Control your viewers

When you set your Instagram profile to Private, you will have to approve new followers one by one before they can view your posts. If you have some photos you want to share with some followers and not with others, the Private account setting gives you the most control over your content. This will also let you control unwanted comments and likes on your pictures. If someone is getting on your nerves too much, you can use the block feature to get rid of them once and for all.

Pro: No Web Access

Instagram started out as a mobile app, but now it expanded to the internet which means that all those who find your Instagram feed can view everything you posted recently. Once you set the account to Private, your Instagram pictures can’t be shared by others through social media. It also prevents them from downloading pictures. As you can see, you have more control of your pictures, and you can easily protect your content from unwanted eyes.

Now let’s get to the cons of using Private Instagram profiles.

Con: Hidden from new followers

If someone you know tries to find you on Instagram to follow you, they won’t be able to see any of your posts. If people can’t view what you’re posting, they wouldn’t follow you just because they do not now what you are about. Your account will become harder to discover by other users because your images don’t appear in the Explore tab or the hashtag search. Having a Private account will make it more difficult to gain new followers.

Con: No Engagement

As an Instagram user, you can leave comments and likes on any post on the network, no matter if you are following the person who posted it or not. When you set your account to Private, this option stops to exist and individuals who don’t follow you won’t be able to engage your content in any way. You will also need more time to filter through all the requests and posts on your profile, so if you don’t have time, don’t make your profile Private.
